Did You Know?
Supermarkets Reject Thousands of Cherries Every Year
And we are on a mission to rescue these gems!
You may have seen beautiful, uniformed, red cherries in the supermarkets this time of the year. But, this beauty comes with a cost! Every year, thousands of cherries are destined to be wasted for not meeting the supermarkets' unrealistic beauty standards.
Farmers Pick is working together with local farmers to save these perfectly imperfect cherries and bring them directly to your door.
Reasons for Rejections
-
Too Wonky
-
Slightly Blemished
-
Missing Stems
-
A Bit Small
Supermarkets' Beauty Standards Hurt Us All!
Not just farmers, you are also feeling the pinch when cherries are rejected
Growing cherries is a gamble for farmers, as these delicate fruits are highly vulnerable to weather shifts and disease. Even the slightest rain at the wrong time can lead to cracking and splitting, making cherries look “imperfect” by commercial standards.
Supermarkets and major retailers often reject these less-than-perfect cherries, along with any that are stemless, slightly small, blemished, or irregular in shape. This leaves farmers with little choice but to throw away a large portion of their crop.
Since farmers cover all the costs of growing cherries themselves, every rejected harvest brings a major financial hit. Some are even forced to shut down their farms entirely.
For consumers, this means a reduced supply and, ultimately, higher prices, making cherries harder to afford.
